Hey! Just read your answer to a question you got about wheat. Just curious to know your opinon on carbs like quinoa and oatmeal? I have also felt lately that I should avoid too much gluten, and it is nice to share opinons :D
Hey, sweetheart :)
I’ve had quinoa just once I believe and I didn’t like the taste much so I had to research it real fast.
Quinoa has a glycemic index of 35 which is pretty good for a carb (for instance brown rice has a GI of 55). It also has more fat and protein, which is good and will keep you fuller for longer (and also makes it harder to overeat on it). You can see more nutrition facts here and here.
Oatmeal on the other hand is very high in calories - it has over 330 calories for 100g (that’s more than bacon!!), while quinoa for example has only 120 per 100g. Plus most people make it with water and that gives you just carbs (you need an adequate source of fat and protein with each meal!). It’s GI is 58 and that of instant oatmeal is 66 (again, much higher than quinoa). In my opinion oatmeal is one of the dumbest things to eat alone as a whole meal, it’s just so not worth it - it’s high in calories, raises blood sugar, doesn’t keep you full for long. Any nutrients you can find in oatmeal you can get elsewhere in bigger quantities and for less calories/sugar. A couple of eggs with a piece of fruit and a handful of raw nuts is a MUCH healthier breakfast imo. Of course, if you love the taste you should totally have it but if you eat it just because female magazines say it’s oh, so healthy, then you might be better off having something else instead.
